Our standard Cumbrian Shepherds Hut is called "Mickleden” and measures a traditional 12 feet (3.6m) long by 7 feet (2.2m) wide, the following information details this standard hut, other than where stated.
Chassis and Wheels
Cumbrian Huts chassis are fabricated locally by Pier 1 Metalworks, Kendal, Cumbria and consist of a mild steel “space frame”, galvanized and painted black – the paint is Manor High Build Vinyl, from which the axle is hung and fixed and upon which the superstructure sits. It is constructed from 3” x 3”Angle Iron and has exceptional torsional and integral strength and stiffness.
The wheels are sourced from one of the few remaining foundries in the UK and made to our own traditional design from cast iron 220 by Manor Foundry in Derbyshire.
The axles are fabricated locally in Staveley by PB Engineering. They are supplied treated and painted black. A turning axle at the front and basic tow bar are also fitted as standard.
As an alternative option, we can manufacture the chassis from solid oak, with big section wooden axles and runners.

The Superstructure is built up as follows:
Base (floor) from 13mm WPB Plywood, 39 x 69mm CLS (Canadian Sawn Lumber) Treated Framework and in-filled with Polyurethane Insulation with 13mm OSB ready to receive the flooring of your choice. The walls and ceiling are from 39 x 69mm CLS (Canadian Sawn Lumber ) studwork with TG&V panelling internally and the cavity is in-filled with glass insulation as standard and sealed externally with a breathable waterproof membrane. A natural Sheepswool insulation option is available. The ceiling is formed from curved timber rafters supported by an intermediate curved beam.
